What is Artificial Intelligence(AI) ?

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence can be described as any task performed by a program or a machine, that if a human carried out the same activity, we would say the human had to apply intelligence to accomplish the task. That obviously is a fairly broad definition, which is why you will sometimes see arguments whether something is truly AI or not.

AI will typically demonstrate at least some of the following behaviours related to human intelligence: planning, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, knowledge representation, perception, motion.

What are the uses for AI?

AI is ubiquitous today, used to recommend what you should buy next, recommends youtube video suggestions, to display relevant ads to social media users, to understand what you say to virtual assistants like Siri, google assistant, to spot spam or detect credit card fraud.

The chart below will help you to understand the uses of AI in different fields.

What are the different types of AI?

At a very high level, AI can be split into three categories:
  • ANI
  • AGI
  • ASI
ANI stands for Artificial Narrow Intelligence. It's often called as Weak AI because it specializes in only one category. Examples are self-driving cars, Siri.  AGI stands for Artificial General Intelligence also known as Strong AI or human-level AI because it has the same capabilities as a human ie ability to reason, solve puzzles, make judgements, plan, learn, communicate. Examples include visual perception, speech recognition, decision making, and translation between languages. ASI known as Artificial Superintelligence is the type of Intelligence that is smarter than humans. These AI are not very common in present but may be created in future.

AI has a vast field of area. The chart below shows the different fields where AI is used.
